How to Eliminate Conflicts in the Workplace

Think about the last conflict with your team...

Do you remember what caused it?

I’m willing to bet it was unclear expectations.

Because when people expect something without making those expectations clear — conflict arises.

So — how can you set clear expectations?

By creating clear team norms.

Here’s how to do it step-by-step:

Step 1 - Brainstorm

First — get together with your team and have everyone spend 2-3 minutes brainstorming what they value in a team.

Some example values could be:

  • Submitting information on time

  • Being transparent & honest

  • etc...

Step 2 - Discuss

Next — have each person share what they came up with and then facilitate an open and honest conversation around the results.

The conversation has 2 main goals:

  1. Make everyone feel heard and understood

  2. Identify behaviors and norms that align with those values

Step 3 - Finalize

Finally — review each behavior/norm and create a Team Charter with ALL of your findings.
